President Trump is considering Fox News host and former judge Jeanine Pirro to serve as the top prosecutor in the District of Columbia, according to multiple reports.
Pirro is not the only candidate being considered as a replacement for Ed Martin U.S. attorney in D.C. Trump indicated earlier Thursday he would likely withdraw Martin’s nomination in the face of GOP opposition.
ABC News first reported that Trump was eyeing Pirro for the post and noted the nomination could come as soon as Thursday, though nothing was finalized.
A White House spokesperson declined to comment.
Pirro is a former judge and prosecutor who was elected multiple times to serve as district attorney for Westchester County in New York.
She is currently a Fox News host who appears regularly on “The Five,” though Pirro was not among the show’s panelists on Thursday as speculation swirled about the D.C. job.
Pirro is an outspoken supporter of the president.
Martin’s chances of confirmation hit a roadblock when Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), a member of the Judiciary Committee, said Tuesday he would not back the nominee, effectively sinking his nomination given the tight margins in the Senate.
Martin, who has never served as a prosecutor, has been serving in the role on an interim basis and has already taken a number of remarkable moves in his short tenure. He otherwise is set to continue serving as interim U.S. attorney until May 20.
A former “Stop the Steal” speaker, Martin represented several Jan. 6 defendants in trials, while one of his first moves in his current post was to reassign or dismiss prosecutors on those cases.
