(NEXSTAR) — While many Americans have already received their 2024 tax returns, with the average return totaling $3,324, others are only now getting their deposits or checks.
These taxpayers are largely those who filed their taxes in May. This could have been because they required an extension, or because the IRS extended their deadline due to severe weather or wildfires.
If you were one of those taxpayers who filed in May, and you’re expecting a refund, you shouldn’t need to wait much longer.
Generally speaking, refunds for taxpayers who filed online and opted for direct deposit should arrive within three weeks, the IRS says. That means those who filed between May 1 and May 12 have likely received their refund in their accounts. If you filed between May 13 and May 31, you may not see your refund until about June 21 (or June 23, considering June 21 is a Saturday).
Your payments may come a week later if you filed online and requested a check in the mail. So if you e-filed between May 1 and May 12, your refund could arrive between now and June 9. If you filed in the second half of May, your payment window would be between about June 10 and June 28.
The refund timeline for those who filed paper returns and opted for either direct deposit or a check is typically between four and eight weeks, according to Bankrate. For May filers, that could mean refunds won’t arrive until the end of July.
Regardless of when you filed your 2024 tax return, you can track your refund’s status on the IRS’s Where’s My Refund? tool and via the IRS2GO app.
If you file electronically, your refund status will be available within 24 hours. If you’re filing a paper return, it will take four weeks for your status to appear on the Where’s My Refund? tool. If you’re electronically filing a previous year’s tax return, it will take three or four days for refund status information to become available.
To track down your refund, you’ll need your Social Security or taxpayer ID number, your filing status, and the exact refund amount you’re expecting.
The Where’s My Refund? tool will only track your federal refund. You’ll need to check with your state’s department of revenue to determine if there is a way to track your state refund.
