Live updates: Trump to sit down with new Canadian prime minister; Bessent set to testify in House

Canada’s new prime minister, Mark Carney, will visit the White House on Tuesday for his first visit with President Trump, who continues to advocate for America’s neighbor to the north to become its 51st state.

Trump and his allies have steadily claimed Canada is kept afloat by the U.S., with the president saying in an interview Sunday that “We subsidize Canada to the tune of $200 billion a year.” He’s sought stiff tariffs on Canadian goods to try to correct that imbalance. But Canadians have no interest in joining the U.S.

On Capitol Hill, several Cabinet secretaries will make the case for their department’s budgets or offer a report on their work.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is set to appear in a House Appropriations subcommittee oversight hearing. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem will testify in a similar hearing. Both start at 10 a.m. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins will testify on her department’s budget in a Senate Appropriations hearing at 10:30 a.m.

Meanwhile, House Republicans are working overtime to find common ground on a reconciliation bill that will push Trump’s agenda forward, as a push for massive spending cuts that could mean a reduction in Medicaid funding has been met with resistance.
