President Trump on Friday said he spoke to French President Emmanuel Macron after a video emerged of him being shoved by first lady Brigitte Macron, telling reporters that the couple is fine.
Fox News’s Peter Doocy asked Trump about the video that showed Macron being smacked in the face and asked if he had marital advice for the couple.
Trump laughed and replied, “make sure the door remains closed.”
“That was not good,” he added. “No, I spoke to him and he’s fine, they’re fine. They’re two really good people. I know them very well. And, I don’t know what that was all about but I know him very well and they’re fine.”
Tech mogul Elon Musk, who attended and was the main focus of Friday’s press event, added, pointing to the black eye on his face, “I’ve got a little shiner here.”
Macron has since said he was “joking around” with his wife, ABC News reported. The recording took place as he was leaving his plane, once the door had opened, after landing in Hanoi, Vietnam.
“We are bickering and joking with my wife and a video becomes a sort of geoplanetary catastrophe,” Macron said on Monday, according to ABC. He also denied any “domestic scene,” adding, “This is all a bit of nonsense.”
Macron visited Trump at the White House in February and the two were together at the Vatican last month for the funeral of Pope Francis.
