A Delta flight this week that took off from Madrid, Spain was diverted to an island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean after the plane experienced a mechanical issue.
The Delta flight 127 departed from Madrid on Sunday and it was en route to New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport when it was forced to divert to “Lajes, Azores (TER) after indication of a mechanical issue with an engine.”
The travelers and the crew deplaned via “stairs at TER” and were “accommodated overnight in area hotels and provided meals,” Delta Air Lines said in a statement to multiple outlets.
The travelers were then transferred to another flight and eventually landed at John F. Kennedy Airport on July 7.
“The flight landed safely, and we sincerely apologize to our customers for their experience and delay in their travels,” the airline said in a statement.
The Azores are a volcanic archipelago of nine islands located around 850 miles west of Portugal. The islands are situated in the Macaronesia region of the North Atlantic Ocean, roughly 930 miles northwest of Morocco.
