Jury selected in trial for accused would-be Trump assassin

A jury has been selected in the trial of a man accused of attempting to assassinate President Trump as he golfed in south Florida last year.

On Wednesday, the third day of jury selection, 12 jurors and four alternates were picked to hear the criminal case against North Carolina native Ryan Routh, according to The Hill’s sister network NewsNation.

Routh, who has pleaded not guilty to five criminal charges including attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate, is defending his own case. If convicted, he could face life imprisonment.

Federal prosecutors allege that Routh staked out Trump’s West Palm Beach golf course for 12 hours last year before pushing the muzzle of a rifle through the perimeter, near the sixth hole. They say a Secret Service agent saw him and fired, and he fled without firing a shot.

One juror, a single mother of a 2-year-old, said they saw the news when Routh was arrested, according to NewsNation.

Four jurors have ties to law enforcement, and a fifth juror’s mother was a former clerk for another judge in the federal courthouse where Routh is being tried.

Another juror said they were the victim of a crime.
