President Trump said Friday morning there is a “high degree of certainty” that the suspect in the Charlie Kirk shooting was in custody.
“I think with a high degree of certainty we have him in custody,” Trump said during an appearance on “Fox & Friends.”
The president cautioned he was “subject to be corrected,” but told the Fox News hosts that he was sharing what he had been told just before going on air.
Trump said someone close to the subject had notified authorities. The informant, Trump said, was a minister.
“So much work has been done over the last two and a half days…but yeah, I think we’re in great shape. And he’s in custody,” Trump added.
Law enforcement had not announced that it had apprehended a suspect, though there was a scheduled update for Friday morning. Officials late Thursday had released additional images of the suspect and video footage of the suspected shooter on the roof of a building at the time of the shooting, but they had not shared a name.
“Again, I’m always subject to be corrected. But you know I’ve just given you, just based on what I’m hearing,” Trump said on Fox News. “They’ll give you a much more active – heard about five minutes before I walked in. As I’m walking in, they said, looking real good. They have the person that they wanted.”
Kirk, 31, was shot and killed during an appearance at Utah Valley University on Wednesday. The conservative activist was a close ally of the White House and was a close friend of Donald Trump Jr. and many administration officials.
