Capitol Police arrest 14 taking part in housing protest

Capitol Police arrested 14 housing protesters in the Dirksen Senate Office Building cafeteria on Wednesday afternoon.

Capitol Police confirmed to The Hill that the protestors, who reportedly shouted, “Housing is a human right,” were arrested for “crowding, obstructing, or incommoding.”

The protest comes as the Trump administration’s federal law enforcement surge in Washington has resulted in the clearing of homeless encampments throughout the nation’s capital.

According to a one-night census D.C. officials released last week, 764 people live on the street in Washington — 81 of whom live in tents, with the other 683 listed as having “unsure status.”

President Trump’s control of the Metropolitan Police Department in D.C. expires on Wednesday, but last week the deployment of D.C. National Guard was extended in the nation’s capital through December.
