Fox News host Laura Ingraham cast doubt on President Trump for saying he’ll allow thousands of Chinese students into the U.S.
“Why are you helping Harvard? That just helps Harvard and UCLA. You are all helping those schools, why? They are basically factories of anti-American propaganda, now getting a big influx of cash because of the Chinese students,” Ingraham said Monday on her primetime show.
“I mean, I know President Trump has always been very pro-Chinese student. I just don’t understand it for the life of me,” she continued. “Those are 600,000 spots that American kids won’t get.”
Trump earlier on Monday upset some conservatives when he said he could be open to some 600,000 Chinese students attending American universities as he negotiates a trade deal with Beijing.
“We’re going to get along good with China. I hear so many stories about we’re not going to allow their students,” Trump told reporters at the White House. “No, we’re going to allow their students to come in. We’re going to allow — it’s very important. 600,000 students. It’s very important.”
The president’s comments come amid his administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration, including targeting international students at major colleges and universities that it argues are promoting anti-American ideals.
