Live updates: Democrats block government funding bill for 10th time as shutdown enters third week

The Senate on Thursday failed to reopen the government for the 10th time as the shutdown stretches into its third week.

This was the third time this week the Senate considered the House-backed GOP measure, but the vote margins did not budge.

There’s still more on the upper chamber’s docket Thursday as it pivots to a vote on an $852 billion defense appropriations bill later this afternoon.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) scheduled the vote in an effort to put Democrats on the record if they block the measure, as Republicans spotlight how the shutdown is impacting national security. It also comes as the GOP is seeking to grab momentum back from the Democrats.

President Trump is set to get his intelligence briefing in the morning, then make an announcement in the afternoon from the Oval Office.

In state-level campaigns, two pivotal debates take place Thursday evening. New York City mayoral candidates face off, looking for an edge. Virginia attorney general candidates will meet, and the first question is bound to be about controversial text messages that have roiled the race.
