Live updates: Patel faces senators amid mounting scrutiny; Trump heads to UK

FBI Director Kash Patel will appear Tuesday morning before the Senate Judiciary Committee for an oversight hearing, amid mounting criticism over his role in the agency’s investigation of the assassination of Charlie Kirk nearly a week ago.

The director is certain to get questions about bureau firings, the FBI’s role in reviewing the files related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and a number of other moves that Democrats argue have politicized the agency.

President Trump and first lady Melania Trump fly to the U.K. on Tuesday for two days of pageantry and key meetings. It’ll include Trump’s first sit-down with King Charles III and a regal state dinner. A bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Keir Starmer will raise questions on Ukraine, Gaza and trade, among other issues.

With two weeks until the government funding deadline, the showdown over a potential shutdown is escalating. House Republicans are aiming to unveil a mostly “clean” stopgap bill, but without major concessions on health care that Democrats in both chambers are demanding.
