The “big, beautiful bill” is grinding slowly towards a Senate vote after a tumultuous week where Republicans have squabbled over amendments and overhauled numerous sections to pass scrutiny from the chamber’s parliamentarian.
President Trump, who has maintained that he wants the massive legislation package on his desk by July 4, is almost certain to weigh in on the legislative marathon in a pre-taped interview scheduled to air Sunday morning on Maria Bartiromo’s “Sunday Morning Futures” show.
Other Sunday shows will be dominated by lawmakers from both parties, many of them senators likely to be gearing up for a mammoth day on Capitol Hill. The Democrats’ plan to force Senate clerks to read the entirety of the nearly 1,000-page bill, followed by an unlimited “vote-a-rama” spree of amendments from both sides of the aisle that could continue into the wee hours of the morning.
The bill’s viability has been in flux throughout much of the week, with GOP senators raising objections over a number of provisions regarding Medicaid, spending cuts, and public lands.
Democratic politics received a jolt on Tuesday with the stunning victory of Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist and state assemblyman, in the Democratic primary for New York City mayor. Mamdani, who polled near one percent at the beginning of this year, rocketed past former Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) in a viral campaign focused on rent and affordability.
His presumptive victory has electrified many Democrats, hopeful that they have found a blueprint for the party’s struggles with reaching voters on economic issues. Mamdani will appear on NBC’s “Meet the Press” to discuss the lessons of his campaign and the road ahead.
Meanwhile, debate has continued over the extent of the damage on three Iranian nuclear sites from Trump’s strikes last weekend. Administration officials have aggressively vowed that the sites sustained catastrophic damage, while other intelligence has painted a more complicated situation that will evolve as further details emerge.
International Atomic Energy Agency Director-General Rafael Mariano Grossi is expected to address this picture on CBS’ “Face the Nation.” Trump may also address Iran on Bartiromo’s show.
