Texas state Sen. Angela Paxton (R) filed for divorce from state Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) on Thursday, according to court documents.
The development comes as Paxton is challenging incumbent Texas Sen. John Cornyn (R ) for his seat in a closely watched primary.
Paxton said in a post on X that he and his wife were starting a new chapter.
“After facing the pressures of countless political attacks and public scrutiny, Angela and I have decided to start a new chapter in our lives,” Paxton said, adding that he “could not be any more proud or grateful for the incredible family that God has blessed us with.
The state senator announced her decision in a separate post on X.
“Today, after 38 years of marriage, I filed for divorce on biblical grounds,” Angela Paxton said. “I believe marriage is a sacred covenant and I have earnestly pursued reconciliation. But in light of recent discoveries, I do not believe that it honors God or is loving to myself, my children, or Ken to remain in the marriage.
“I move forward with complete confidence that God is always working everything together for the good of those who love Him and who are called according to His purpose,” she continued.
Paxton has served as state attorney general since 2015. He was impeached in 2023 and faced allegations of corruption and taking part in an extramarital affair.
The state senator, who was elected in 2019, attended her husband’s impeachment trial but did not vote in it.
