President Trump announced “substantial tariffs” on imported furniture on Monday, without providing details, in an effort to promote North Carolina firms.
“In order to make North Carolina, which has completely lost its furniture business to China, and other Countries, GREAT again, I will be imposing substantial Tariffs on any Country that does not make its furniture in the United States,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.

The president previously said that his administration would put in place a 50 percent tariff on all kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities and related products, scheduled to begin on Wednesday, alongside a 30 percent tariff on upholstered furniture.
In the first few months of his second term, Trump’s tariff policy has rattled global markets, strained relationships with American allies like Canada and the European Union and increased economic anxiety.
The Supreme Court is set to consider if Trump can use emergency powers for the justification of his expansive tariffs worldwide in early November.
Trump’s announcement on imported furniture tariffs came shortly after he said that he was imposing a 100 percent tariff on movies not made domestically.
“Our movie making business has been stolen from the United States of America, by other Countries, just like stealing ‘candy from a baby,’” Trump said in a separate Truth Social post.
The president had previously warned of 100 percent levies on foreign movies earlier this year.
